Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

We conduct an initial consultation to get to know you, your life experiences, and your mental health concerns. From there, we will advise a treatment path moving forward and discuss how many sessions you may need to address your concerns and get the support that you need. No two clients are the same, or experience the same life’s challenges. And so, the level of support or the number of therapy sessions you may require will be entirely different. After the initial consultation - we will be better placed to discuss your support needs.

Some of our clients benefit most from accessing regular therapeutic sessions, and others, may only need a few sessions to support them on their way in their own journeys. What will work for you, will be entirely individual and dependent on what is happening for you right now, and how equipped you feel to tackle your life’s challenges.

Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist?

No - You do not need a referral from your GP to be supported by a psychologist. Many of our clients choose to book sessions with us when they need it most. Our online booking system makes it easy for clients to book with only a few steps before their appointment is confirmed. Our online booking system allows clients to book appointments after-hours, and takes only a few minutes.

Other clients may access our service at the recommendation of their GP. Their GP will issue them with a Referral and a Mental Health Care Plan. A Mental Health Care Plan allows you to access a monetary rebate for each of your consultations with a Registered Psychologist, for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. The Medicare rebate for sessions with a Generally Registered Psychologist is $92.90 per session (2023). This lowers the overall cost of your consultations - meaning you pay a smaller out-of-pocket expense for seeing a psychologist.

Does Medicare cover the fees for psychology services?

There are cases in which Medicare may partially cover your consultation fees. This will require a referral and a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Medicare offers a rebate of $92.90 per consultation with a Generally Registered Psychologist (2023). This lowers the total cost of your consultation, however, there is an out-of-pocket expense to you as Medicare does not cover the total cost of the consultation. There is an out-of-pocket fee of $87.10 per consultation with our psychologist, for clients with a current mental health care plan.

Will my personal information be kept private?

Your privacy is always a priority. It is our legal and ethical obligation to protect your information and provide you with a safe space to access the support you need. Reaching out for support with your mental health takes immense courage and bravery, and so, we make every effort to protect your personal information. There are a few exceptional circumstances where we may need to share or disclose information to a third-party. These exceptions are explained to you at the start of your initial consultation, and clearly described in our consent forms. You are welcome to ask your practitioner about this during your initial consultation.

At times, you may wish for your practitioner to contact a third-party on your behalf. This may assist with advocating for your needs, linking you through referrals with other appropriate health practitioners or liaising with the professionals supporting you. This may include a GP, Psychiatrist, other health professional, school, employer or community service provider. Your practitioner will require your consent to exchange information, and will first discuss with you, the clinically relevant information that will be shared.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor?

To answer this question simply, a registered psychologist and a registered counsellor have different qualifications, training and educational backgrounds. However, both are trained and registered with respective governing bodies and are dedicated to keeping up-to-date with the latest mental health practices and research to better support their clients. Both a psychologist and counsellor are trained in supporting clients with different mental health needs.

Registered psychologists are registered with and governed by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). Counsellors are registered with and governed by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). Both are required to upkeep their clinical registration by participating in regular clinical training and supervision, and to be aware of developments in evidence-based treatments and approaches.
